Chapter 2, C:  To fix what's cracked

Minx will always remember that she abandoned Krism.

Her broken voice pleaded between desperate sobs amidst of all the chaos. She clawed at the earth in agony, as she pressed her forehead against Krism's, a cold, wet hand reaches over, and held hers.

Words lost its way out of Minx's mouth, but she wasn't unheard. Krism looked up with tearful eyes, and her ripped lips parted into a weak smile.

Minx lost it. Breath left her lungs uncontrollably, and intelligible words were muttered between loud wails. Tears fell onto their hands, and made clean little spots on her dark, bloodied skin.

Russ and Pewdie waved to the other two, who nodded back, and disappeared into the thick forest back the way they came. Ken pushed off another walker reaching violently towards him, then finished him with an axe. Deaf took shaky shots at the walkers obstructing their road to escape.

"Please... Don't..." was roughly made out between her cries, she grasped Krism's hand harder. Completely unaware of Deaf's urgent tugs at her collar. "Please..."

Deaf and Ken attempted to free their entwined hands, but they held on tight. "MINX!!" Ken cried, "COME ON!!"

A walker came in between the two, and charged at Minx's arm with open jaws. With the last bit of her strength, Krism freed of Minx's hand and snatched the Walker's foot, it fell to the floor. She fought to trap the struggling man, but would not let go.

Deaf helped the paralyzed Minx to her feet, and jerked her away from the scene. Ken followed. The crowd began to stroll towards them, and closed in slowly like curtains.

"I'm so sorry..."

"I hope they're okay..." Marzia looked up at the corroded stone statue of an angel that stood vainly behind the empty altar. Cry turned to look at the praying girl. "They will be." He states. "We're a strong bunch of people. Just hope they'd get back soon."

Marzia agreed, and looked down at her stomach, placing a hand over it to stifle another growl, and caressed it gently. "We're starving..."

When she looked up, she was greeted by Cry's eyes intently gazing at her. They were blue, like Felix's. But they were calm, and cold, and so deep and full of unvoiced thoughts, she could have seen a library. Marzia giggles as Cry draws away awkwardly, and joins to laugh with her.

They stopped, but their laughter still echoed the room and danced off the walls. "How are you feeling?" She began.

"Better." He smiled, "Headache's gone."

She looked down, and noticed his bandage. She nodded towards it. "How's that doing?"

Cry places a hand over it, and laughs. "A minor problem." He spoke quickly. "How have you and Felix been holding out?"

They ran as fast as they can with speedy Walkers tailing. Ken looked back constantly, and chopped away any that followed dangerously too close. "If we run fast enough, we can lose 'em!" He broke into a light chuckle, but obviously too soon as he was caught by a tree root and fell backwards onto the forest floor. One tailing walker rapidly approaching.

Ken searched around for his axe, finding it had flew off his hand and landed just out of reach. He kicked at the root in desperation, then looked up to find a still Walker. Blind eyes staring blankly at him. He froze too.

Then the walker fell back, and landed with a hard thud on the floor, his head in a pool of rotten juice. Minx had shot it. Just in time.

"Minx!" Ken laughed nervously, looking at a woman who's heart may be just as dead, with just the same fear. "I... I thought you were never gonna break out of that."

She didn't look down at Ken. After finally turning away from the direction she'd been staring at for too long, she walked calmly ahead and kept going. Eventually out of the thick, dark forest.

"... Then Felix and I raced back to our rooms, and locked the door behind us."

"Sounds like a close call." Cry shook his head.

Marzia nodded, then looked back up at Cry. "Thanks again for taking care of us." She spoke with a smile, and giggled as the man's cheeks flushed with red. "Really, if you weren't here, we'd be lost in Walmart or something."

"Lord forbid if that happens." Cry played along sarcastically.

The two's aimless chattering ceased as they jumped at the sudden knocks at the door. Cry got up and jogged over to the entrance, unlocked it, and greeted his friends who'd returned with empty hands. But that wasn't what concerned the two. "Where are Minx and others?" Cry asked, a loud thud at the door wrote over his words.

On the cue, was Minx. She'd slammed the door behind her, and looked up with empty eyes. The sight terrified Cry. He'd seen this look before: she wore the same, hollow eyes as Russ when he'd faced the car crash.

"What's wrong?" Marzia asked cluelessly, looking around at the beaten team who stood silent with hanging heads. "Wh... Where's Krism?"

The boys looked at each other anxiously, Ken scratched his beard. "She..."

A loud, crazed laughter interrupted him, it was sharp, and insane, and afraid. Everyone's attention rested on Minx's now dull and gray eyes that were spinning in her head. "She's dead" She clawed at her scalp and made mad shrieks between almost intelligible words. "She's dead... She's dead. She's dead."

She suddenly stopped, and dropped to the floor. Kneeling before the stone angel, who looked down at her in disgust.

The noise was gone, and replaced by mournful sobs.

Deaf walked up to her nervously, and put one hand on her shoulder. He flinched as she slapped his hand away.

"Michelle..." Pewdie whispered.

"I didn't save her." She murmured, hands caging her shame-ridden face. "I ran away, I couldn't stop her pain... I... "

Deaf walked in front of her, and got down on one knee. Shaking her awake with his own cracking, brittle voice. "W... Wake up!!"

She began laughing again, and met Deaf's terrified eyes with her cold smile.

"She could have lived."

"She had no chance!! Snap out of it!!"

"Don't you fucking tell me what to do!!" She shrieked in pain, suddenly snatching the the gun away from Deaf's belt, and pushed it against his neck menacingly. A silent panic occupied the room as she cried with insane laughter. "I could have saved her from the pain. I could have saved her--"

Ken stepped closer. "Put down the gun, Michelle."

She whipped around and pointed the gun to him. Then scanned it along everyone's panicked faces.

"I left her to die there. With nothing."

Deaf gathered his all his courage, and spoke. "She told you to live."

Click, clack.

"I don't deserve that."

The hollow space echoed as Minx cocked the gun. And like a trance, she laid the muzzle against her temple.

"I don't deserve her."

The church bell knelled in the background. Something drove Ken to burn through the fear that had frozen over everyone. "Michelle...!!"

"I killed her."
