Chapter 1, A: Meet Me

She sat cowering against the foot of the bed, delicate face evident with effort to keep herself presentable even in given situations. Bright and once carefree, dark eyes hid itself away in the darkness of the hotel room. The night had began to fall, dusk light seeped through the barricaded window, accompanied by the restless humming of groans and growls that roamed the lifeless streets.

The steady flutters of anxiety in her chest grew into an agonizing pain. She stood, then fell again, and stood once more, crouching slightly. She shuffled restlessly along the carpet, and mumbled to herself. What ifs... What ifs... The wild mind grew louder and louder, until a knock sounded at the door and she let out a terrified shriek, dragging herself back in a panic.

Another knock. Much slower compared to her heavy breathing. And then a muffled, familiar whisper at the door.

'Marzie!' It called, her heavy heart finally free. 'Marzia it's me!'

Marzia hurried to the barricaded door, moved the chairs out of the way and unlocked it. As soon as the door was firmly closed behind them, she tackled the unsuspecting man with an inexplainable happiness. She called his name again, and again. 'Felix, Felix, Felix!'

'Hey,' He hugged back, kissing her calmly on the forehead, though his unresting heartbeat said otherwise. 'I managed to get online from the Starbucks across the street. They still had electricity.'

'I'm just glad you're back.' Her voice began to crack, and Felix knew better to fix her first. He held her tighter and kissed her again. 'I'm sorry sweetheart.'

Marzia nods.

'Were you okay in here?'

'Yeah.' She gave a choking laugh. 'Mr. Chair did a good job protecting me.'

'Chair mode activated!' Felix winks and boops Marzia's nose. 'Always works! Don't even worry about it! They ain' gon' touch a thang.'

They giggled together, a little spark of blind happiness, but was soon drowned out by the sea of this surreal reality they were trapped in, and was gone, like they soon found the smile on their faces.

'I managed to stay on the internet for 2 hours before those things found me. And I've came in contact with a friend.' Felix's mouth curled up into a proud little smile. 'Ken and Cry's gang met up a few days ago. And since we're all caught up in this, they thought maybe we should stay in a group. Besides, we don't know barrel about America. I think It's best if we stay with someone who does. What do you say?'
